MSP welcomes pledge to help businesses get online

Finlay Carson MSP

HELP will be given high street businesses trying to generate online income, Holyrood has been told. Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson welcomed a commitment from SNP Finance Secretary Kate Forbes to offer help. He questioned the Finance Secretary at a virtual question time on what support the SNP Government will be giving to regenerate town centres, as well as providing urgent guidance to shops on social distancing. Mr Carson, Conservative, also highlighted businesses being able to trade online during the current climate and called for clear advice to be given by Business Gateway and the South of Scotland Enterprise for businesses. In response, the Finance Secretary said that she was “very keen” for funding support to be given to support those trading online and allow them to gain some form of income during the Covid-19 pandemic. Commenting Finlay Carson MSP said: “Our high streets were already facing many pressures even before the Covid-19 pandemic and the current lockdown has only increased the challenges they are facing. “We need to ensure that businesses have the clear advice and support on how to continue to trade and I fully believe that funding to encourage online trading can be at the heart of that right now. “It is those businesses who adapt to the current circumstances that can remain at the heart of our high street so it is pleasing that the SNP's Finance Secretary confirmed she was very keen to see this funding support delivered. “We have a new South of Scotland Enterprise Agency which must be a driving force to support businesses across my constituency and that will also include providing the guidance in terms of social distancing when they re-open. “I will be continuing to pressure for greater support for businesses at this time and hope that digital trading can play a key role in this.”
