Salute to our armed forces

Armed Forces Day flag in Stranraer

SOUTH Scotland MSP Colin Smyth has added his voice to the thousands saying a huge thank you to the men and women of our Armed Forces,as the country prepares to celebrate Armed Forces Day on Saturday. While the region would usually have been playing host to a number of different Armed Forces Day celebrations, this year Covid-19 restrictions means things are being done differently. Mr Smyth said: “Like many people in the run-up to Armed Forces Day, I would normally have had the privilege of attending a whole host of events from Armed Forces flag raising ceremonies, church services, to the Armed Forces Day parade itself. “While those events won't be happening in the same way this year, it is important we show our support for the men and women of our Armed Forces community, from serving troops and reservists, to their families, to our veterans and cadets. “Arguably it's more important than ever this year because as well as continuing to protect our nation, our Navy, Army and Air Force have once again stepped up to mark during a crisis. They have been helping build the Nightingale hospitals, running mobile testing units, supporting ambulance services, delivering PPE and providing expert planning advice “Who hasn't been inspired by Army veteran Captain Tom Moore and his amazing efforts in the run up to his 100th birthday in raising £32 million for NHS Charities Together? “Captain Tom, like all our Armed Forces family, really have been a shining light during these dark times. “This year's Armed Forces Day is like any other - it's a chance to say thank you.”
