Stranraer boat hoist back in action but is the pier barrier out of action?
The hoist today
THE hoist at Stranraer's old pier was in action today... and the boat it was lifting wasn't the only thing up in the air.
The pier's controversial barriers were also pointing skywards.
Sources told the Free Press: "The barrier went up to let in a mobile crane, hired by the vessels' owners, that was lifting a series of boats from the water and I don't think it's been back down since."
The need for a barrier was questioned by a number of organisations and individuals but the local authority claimed it was a health-and-safety essential for a working harbour and went ahead with installation despite claims that the public were being cut off from casual use of the pier.
The barrier achieved notoriety during last year's Oyster Festival when it thumped a woman on the head. She was not seriously hurt.
