Diamond date for the McMillan dynasty

Hammy and Janet celebrate

THE McMillan name is synonymous with top-flight hotels – especially the prestigious North West Caste in Stranraer – and curling and the dynasty's founders have marked an remarkable milestone. Hammy and Janet McMillan have celebrated their diamond wedding. Daughter Gail Munro, on behalf of the family, told the Free Press: "Our families were delighted to get together, socially distanced, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this wonderful couple." Hammy was brought up in Agnew Crescent, Stranraer, before emigrating to Canada in 1951, aged 20, to work as a builder, having competed his apprenticeship with a local company. Janet was born into a farming family, the Dalrymples, at Auchtralure farm, a mile or so out of Stranraer. Eight years younger than Hammy, she had decided to train as a nurse. Fate had a hand in their first meeting in the town's Garrick Hospital. Hammy was home from Ontario for a holiday but was stuck down with appendicitis. The teenage Janet was in the next ward suffering from the same complaint. After meeting in the hospital they became pen pals when Hammy returned to Canada. She joined him in Canada in 1958 and they got engaged shortly after, marrying in Ayr in 1960. The couple set off for a new life in Canada, with Janet now a fully qualified nurse. Setting up home in Windsor, Ontario, both had good jobs and a wide circle of friends. They kept up with the news from their home down through copies of the Free Press, posted to them weekly. In 1961, they saw in the newspaper that the North West Castle was looking for a buyer and the rest is history. Five children duly followed as, with foresight and hard work, they established one of the most successful hotel chains in Scotland.
