Gyms get the nod for August 31 despite a surge in Covid-19 cases
Gyms get all-clear
FITNESS fans have August 31 ringed on their calendars as it's the date gyms and swimming pools can re-emerge from Covid-19 lockdown.
The news comes despite First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirming 19,534 people have now tested positive for Covid-19 in Scotland, an increase of 77 from yesterday.
"This is the highest number of new cases in almost three months which underlines the need for continued caution," said Miss Sturgeon.
Emma Harper, SNP MSP for South Scotland, had previously welcomed guidance for the indoor leisure and fitness sector issued earlier this week.
I know the Scottish Government have been working hard alongside SportScotland to ensure guidance is in place for the indoor sport and leisure facilities across the whole of Scotland to reopen and I welcome the publishing of that guidance.
"Time has been taken to ensure a sensible and responsible approach to the reopening of this sector and I appreciate the financial impact this has had on businesses despite significant support from the Scottish and UK Governments.
As convener for Holyrood's Mental Health cross-party group I am aware of the physical and mental impact this has had on people who've been unable to enjoy the use of gyms, swimming pools and leisure centres.
"I look forward to seeing this sector fully reopen across Dumfries and Galloway at the appropriate time with all safety measures in place for staff and customers."
